Recreational league for the video game Rocket League is free for competitors

Washington, DC – September 25, 2020 – Game Gym announced today the launch of the District Esports League, Presented by Events DC, a recreational league for the video game Rocket League, serving Washington, DC and the metro DC area.

The District Esports League, Presented by Events DC and powered by Game Gym and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, is a locally owned and operated esports league built from the ground up with the goal of fostering community and highlighting the growing talent in the DMV. Our inaugural Fall season will feature an 8-week series of weekend tournaments in three different events, Rocket League 1v1s, 2v2s, and 3v3s. The District Esports League will start on October 4, 2020, and culminate at the DMV’s Winter Games, Dec 4-6, 2020. All District Esports League qualifiers and championships will be broadcast live on Twitch, and the entire program is free for competitors, and open to the public.

“The District Esports League is a great way for kids to become involved in competitive gaming in a low-pressure environment,” said Game Gym CEO Josh Hafkin. “We are excited to add a recreational league to our portfolio of programs and events that help kids and teenagers to game better and smarter, and help parents to understand how esports can play a healthy and vital role in the lives of their children.”

“Events DC is dedicated to serving and supporting the local esports community by investing in and sponsoring regional tournaments,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “When we think about the things that make the District a world-class city, we think about the city’s blend of sports, culture and events that can’t be found anywhere else – similar to DC’s budding esports efforts. We look forward to growing our future engagement and supporting the regional gaming community through our partnership with Game Gym.”

“During this difficult time, esports offers an excellent opportunity for children to stay involved in their local communities and enjoy video games in a productive way,” said Marcus Coates, Chief, Community Recreation Division, DC Department of Parks and Recreation. “We are in full support of the District Esports League, and we can’t wait for the first round of tournaments!”
